Elephant Trunk Clams

Hubby was tired of the usual shellfish with no filling. Elephant's trunk is so called because of the shape of the ample flesh found within this shellfish. I love the way this dish is done in this place - the flesh is cooked just enough to be done but not overdone so that it's tough. The stirfry with spring onions must have been done over a big fire - just long enough. I treat every time I have had it here.

Grilled Black Pepper Chicken

I am not the sort who would look for black pepper anything. But this one seemed worth trying. It was offered at its usual price but as a set meal, with soup and a drink (ice lemon tea or watermelon juice) thrown in.

So yes, back to the dish. The sauce. The key ingredient. And it did not disappoint. The aroma of black pepper flirts with you before it lingers in the back of the throat as you swallow. I also like the vegetables chosen to go with the chicken - the trilogy of broccoli, carrots and kernals of corn done just right. I had pleasure adding these ingredients to the perfectly done mashed potato.

But I suppose the delight began visually right from the moment the dish was served. Presentation gets my top marks. Colours are good, and each ingredient, including the sauce, was placed strategically well.

nasi lemak

Lunch at Kahve 1 Borneo   RM 7.70

There are two Kahve cafes in Malaysia at the moment, and whilst they have their signature dishes, sometimes you get something different. As in this case. The one at 1Borneo Hypermall has nasi lemak as an option you can choose.

Nicely fried chicken portions, combined with the usual special nasi, freshly fried peanuts and sweet cucumber slices, topped with dark raisins and lashings of homemade sambal sauce - a mouthwatering dish. Ala carte (RM7.70 nett) or part of a set breakfast (RM8.80 nett), this simple local fare is certainly a dish worth trying.

Chicken in Tomato Sauce Linguine

This was a dish that my son tried in the Ipoh branch and he said he really enjoyed it. So since I didn't want too heavy a meal (it was lunch time) I decided to try this.

And was I glad I did!

The tomato sauce was obviously not your out-of-the-bottle sort. Apart from mushroom, onion and capsicum, it had some extra ingredient which made it tangy and yet pleasant. And there was plenty left. I like pasta / linguine like that. And the chicken - I wasn't expecting the grilled slices to go so well with the rest of the ingredients. Actually each piece could have been eaten as it was, but the combination made every morsel a tasty one.

Fried Lamb Chop

Dinner at Kahve 1 Borneo   RM 15.30

Fried lamb conjures up fears of tough, grisly and chewy meat portions. But I was so amazed. These were not only tender, but also tasty! The crusty coating made an interesting combination with the sauce. The amount of sauce doesn't look like a lot, but surprise, surprise, it was more than enough. In fact, my daughter even polished off the cucumber and tomato slices by dipping them in the gravy because it was so tasty! The chips and coleslaw which we both enjoyed were a fitting combination with the rest of the dish.

Fish & Chips

Fish fillets fried just nice. Complemented with chips and sauteed carrots and broccoli. The chips were a wickedly nice complement. Normally I would reach out and grab the tomato sauce but this time, there was no need....

Grilled Paprika Chicken

I was pleasantly surprised. There was just enough paprika to know it was there but not at all overdone.

There was no gravy but there was no need. The chicken was succulent and juicy. Complemented the sauteed vegetables well. The mash made it complete.

I like it!

Laksa

Breakfast at Ur Way   RM 5.00

It's a new place near Chiu Thai Seng. We heard it was good so dropped in.

Prices are reasonable. Portions are acceptable. Suitable for the school-goers in the vicinity.

I found it a little bland though. Perhaps my tastebuds need something stronger but I didnt find it much of a wake-up on the taste stakes.

Beef Lasagna

It was ok as lasagna goes. Nothing to shout about. Served with a bun which I thought was unnecessary. I have my yardstick and this one didnt quite match it.....

Lamb Stew

Dinner at Secret recipe 1 Borneo   RM 26.00

It was supposed to be a special evening out because we wanted to celebrate our daughter's birthday. Her eyes lit up when we stepped into the place. She chose the most expensive item on the menu..... as dinners go, it was the best tastintg one too! When I took a tiny morsel of it, I had flashbacks of England! Yes, price aside, it was a good meal!
